Firstly, start by exploring your flavour preferences. Some people love bright, fruity coffees with hints of citrus, while others prefer the rich, chocolatey notes of darker roasts. The origin of the coffee beans plays a big role in these flavours—Ethiopian beans, for instance, are known for their vibrant, fruity profiles, while Colombian beans, my personal favourite, offer a more balanced and versatile taste.
Next, think about how you brew your coffee. The method you choose can dramatically influence the flavour. French presses and espresso machines are perfect for bold, full-bodied coffee, while pour-over or Aeropress methods highlight clean and delicate flavours. Experimenting with brewing techniques is a fun way to discover what you enjoy most.
Then, if you’re ready to step up your coffee game even further, try exploring specialty coffees. Single-origin or microlot beans often come with unique flavours and fascinating backstories, giving you a chance to taste the distinctive characteristics of a particular farm or region. Choosing these options also supports sustainable and ethical coffee production.
And don’t forget to customize your cup with the right additions. Whether it’s creamy oat milk, a touch of honey, or a dash of flavoured syrup, adding the right extras can transform your coffee into a truly indulgent experience. Personally, I'm partial to the occasion splash of vanilla or caramel syrup in my coffee, if I'm in a descendent sort of mood. But my cupboard is well stocked with a variety of different syrups, all from my favourite brand of Monin, just in case I fancy something a little different.
Oh, and if you're interested in what my bean of choice is, I love a good mug of Brown Bear's Real Columbian blend; a pleasant medium roast that I have been enjoying for many years now. It's just perfect for the sort of white coffee with some sweetness that I absolutely love. And also equally good if I choose to go for something a little more extravagant like a mocha or caramel machiatto.
I sampled a whole bunch of different beans until I settled on this one. And, ultimately, that is what coffee is all about; exploration and enjoyment. Brew Monday is the perfect time to try something new—whether it’s experimenting with a new roast, sampling a different coffee shop to normal, or even learning a bit of latte art.
So, grab your favourite mug and celebrate the magic of coffee. It’s not just about the caffeine—it’s about the joy of discovering your perfect cup. Cheers to good coffee and good vibes!
