Celebrating our boobs

All the way back in 2002, Wonderbra established National Cleavage Day as a fun and playful way to try to get women to engage in the more serious matter of breast cancer awareness and to promote body diversity in all of its wonderful shapes and sizes by allowing us to celebrate flaunting a little bit of sexuality with a whole lot of self-confidence and positivity.

While some may view National Cleavage Day as merely a frivolous bit of titillation, and for some participants I'm sure it is, and the breast cancer awareness element seems to have all but disappeared with that getting lots of attention via other events, I still feel there is plenty of good that can come from joining in with the fun today.

Over the years, perceptions surrounding cleavage and female sexuality have evolved significantly. What was once considered taboo or scandalous is now celebrated openly and proudly. National Cleavage Day plays a role in reshaping these perceptions by helping to normalise the self-expression of body confidence.

National Cleavage Day can also spark conversations about consent and agency over one's body. It emphasizes the importance of women feeling comfortable in their skin and asserting control over how they choose to present themselves. By reclaiming their bodies from the male gaze, women empower themselves and inspire others to do the same.

As a good friend of mine, Felicia Black, so succinctly put it, "It's a dress. not a yes". Let today be a reminder that women also have the right to dress however they want with having to fear for their sexual safety because of some imagined consent that some presume showing a healthy amount of cleavage may indicate.

Of course, despite its positive intentions, National Cleavage Day has not been immune to criticism and controversy and nor should it be. Some argue that it perpetuates the objectification of women and reinforces harmful beauty standards. In cases, I would say that is undeniable. Critics also contend that reducing women to their physical attributes undermines their intellect, talents, and contributions to society. I feel like I have made my thoughts on that abundantly clear each year on Smart and Sexy Day so no need re-tread old ground there.

Ultimately, the essence of National Cleavage Day lies in empowerment through choice. It's about women reclaiming ownership of their bodies and making decisions that align with their values and desires. Whether someone chooses to flaunt their cleavage or cover up is entirely up to them – what matters is that they feel comfortable and confident in their choices. Furthermore, it serves as a reminder that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and forms.

And while I've got your attention, I need to apologise for missing another day yesterday which I had intended to briefly speak about. All is not lost though because I can still belated wish you all a happy Free the Nipple Day

Although it shares some common ground with National Cleavage Day, which makes them very fitting neighbours, Free the Nipple Day is more targeted at advocating for gender equality and challenges societal norms regarding nudity and censorship. Foremost ,the event highlights the disparity between male and female nipples' public acceptance and aims to destigmatize and normalize the female nipple.

Supporters argue that censorship of female nipples perpetuates sexism and contributes to body shaming and inequality. By promoting freedom of expression and bodily autonomy, Free the Nipple Day seeks to stimulate open discussion about gender equality, body positivity, and individual rights.

So, in the spirit of that, here are my nipples in all their glory!
